Neolithic civilizations settled in Serbian lands between the seventh and third millennium BC Paleobalcánicos peoples were conquered by the Romans in the first century BC and then were followed in different regions by the Illyrians, Thracians, Dacians, the Celts, Greeks and Byzantines. The country was also part of Yugoslavia and established a state with Montenegro to declare independence in 2006.

The national history can be seen at many sites. Those interested in archeology should not miss Lepenski Vir, a site near the river Danube with traces dating from the 7300 a. C.
